— Martin/McLane Funeral Home of Hahira. Traffic on Highway 84 was
brought to a standstill Tuesday morning following a two-vehicle
collision that resulted in the death of a Hahira man. Shortly after 9 a.m.,
Valdosta Police Department, Valdosta Fire Department and South
Georgia Medical Center Mobile
Health Care Services personnel responded to the intersection of
Highway 84 and Clay Road where a tractor-trailer
had collided with a pickup truck. One of the drivers, Ronald Darby,
56, was transported to South Georgia
Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Capt. Brian Childress
with the Valdosta Police Department
said Darby, who was driving a GMC 1500, was making a left turn
off Clay Road onto Highway 84 when he was struck
on the driver’s side by a TFX Inc.-owned tractor-trailer, driven
by Jonathan Clark of North Carolina and traveling
east on Highway 84. The two vehicles came to a rest in the inner
westbound lane of Highway 84 several feet from the intersection.
After talking to witnesses and first responders at the scene,
Childress said it appears
Darby did not see the tractor-trailer when he proceeded to make
his turn. The Valdosta Police Department has no
plans to charge Clark with any wrongdoing at this time, Childress
added. Darby is survived by his wife, Sharon,
and two children, Beth and Tanner, both students at Lowndes High
School. Terry Day

may be made to the American Cancer Society, 5441 Hwy 262, Pelham, Ga. 31779. --- From little sister: I told my two children last
week that there are two things that will force you to realize
that you are not invincible. One is the death of a parent
and the other is the death of a sibling.
It was a difficult day to hear that my big brother was dying. It was an even more difficult day hearing the
TAPs bugle call played at his burial and watching two fully decorated and uniformed
servicemen remove the United States flag from my brother’s casket,
painstakingly fold it, salute it, and
present it to Michael’s wife of 26 years. Michael was a Vietnam Veteran with the US Army,
who served his country in
“unacknowledged”, hostile, and unhealthy areas. His return to a normal life after that era was difficult but we
were all relieved and thankful to get him back home. He was not physically disabled but he was deeply affected by the service he rendered
to his country during the Vietnam era.
Michael was loved by all that knew his heart and
we will always remember the precious gifts he gave and the laughter
that was invoked by his jokes and playful trickery. Beth Warren Strickland,
